Videofluroscopic Swallow Studies
(VFSS)

images_edited.jpg

What is a VFSS

A VFSS is a moving X-Ray of your swallowing.   It allows your Speech Pathologist to see what is happening in your mouth and throat when you eat and drink.  It helps us see:

  • How different types offood and liquids move through your mouth and throat

  • If any food/fluids get 'stuck' or left behind

  • Whether food or liquid is entering your airway (literally 'going down the wrong way')

  • How different swallowing strategies or changes in posture affect your ability to swallow

Who needs a VFSS?

A videofluoroscopy can provide valuable insights when further information is needed to understand the cause of your swallowing difficulties. This test is particularly helpful if you:

  • Have experienced chest infections potentially related to trouble eating or drinking

  • Cough or choke while eating or drinking

  • Feel that food or fluids are getting stuck in your throat

  • Need to test different swallowing strategies to determine which foods and liquids are easier for you to consume

What happens during a VFSS?

You will sit in a chair with the X-ray machine positioned in front of or beside your face and neck.

The X-ray itself is painless, and the exposure is brief, with no significant risk to you.

You will be given small amounts of food and drinks, such as pureed fruit, bread, water, and thickened water or juice. A small amount of barium powder is added to make the food and drink visible on the X-ray. The barium has a mildly chalky taste, but it is harmless in the small amount used.

The procedure typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes.

How much does a VFSS cost?

RADIOLOGY FEE

Medicare rebate available.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY FEE

Includes assessment & report.

The total cost comprises of a fee for the radiology service (which is eligible for a Medicare rebate) as well as a fee for the speech pathologist’s time and report. The report is comprehensive and provides detailed information for both you and your healthcare team, including recommended strategies and a management plan for moving forward. You may be eligible for funding - see here for further info. Please contact us for further details or to discuss the process.
